G.B. Crane Cabernet

G.B. Crane Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 3-pack

In 2019, the G.B. Crane Vineyard experienced a wet winter and spring followed by above average temperatures throughout the summer without any major heat spikes. As a result, our vines struggled just the right amount to produce berries of immense concentration. We harvested our Cabernet Sauvignon two weeks earlier than in 2018, in the early mornings of October 9th and 14th. Upon receiving the grapes in the winery, we implemented a four-day cold soak followed by a long, cool fermentation, for a total of 23 days on skins. Aged 20 months in French Oak, 60% new, we bottled the 123 cases in August 2021, allowing for a few years in bottle before its release.

Tasting Notes
The 2019 G.B. Crane Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon pours a deep garnet core with a vivacious ruby red rim. Immediate aromatics of cassis, pluot, black cherry, garrigue and sweet oak come from the glass. Layered notes of raspberry, dark chocolate and blackberry are wrapped within a silky smooth and elegant body with intensity and energy. The consistent tension of acidity keeps the palate balanced with ripe tannins and lengthy closing notes of black licorice and fennel.

The 2018 G.B. Crane Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon pours a purple-tinged maroon with a glowing cardinal rim. Soft yet powerful aromatics saunter from the glass with notes of ripe cassis, blueberry jam, cedar box, tobacco and Herbs de Provence. Voluptuous on entry, the palate exudes a balanced weight of blackberry and black cherry with a pleasing complexity of licorice, anise and leather. Finely textured with ripe tannins, the wine closes with depth and a lasting note of chocolate covered espresso bean.

Following in the footsteps of the successful 2016 vintage, the 2017 growing season was marked with generous rainfall in the late winter followed by a long, hot and dry summer. What resulted was an intense concentration of berries allowing for a wine of remarkable complexity. Harvested at sunrise on September 22nd, 2017, the 2017 G.B. Tasting Notes
A dark garnet with a touch of vermillion on the rim, the wine opens with layers of ripe blue fruits, black cherry, cedar box, dried tobacco and tarragon. Robust on entry with notes of ripe plum and dark chocolate, the mid-palate conjures a tantalizing earthiness, a pluot reduction, a bouquet garni, all framed by a band of acidity and a drizzle of balsamic glaze. Energetic through the finish, the wine closes with dusty, velvety tannins, licorice and a lingering orange peel.

Powerful opulence. The 2014 G.B. Crane Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon opens with layered aromatics of overripe cassis, blackberries and plum. Shades of tarragon, sage and fragrant California chaparral follow closely. The entry is, as expected, rich and lush with a balanced mid-palate rife with juicy stone fruit, black cherries and traces of graphite, clove and licorice. The soft, refined tannins bring the experience to a slow, elegant close - flavors persisting at length.

Stoic, the 2013 GB Crane Cabernet Sauvignon opens with a layered nose of ripe black plum, blackcurrants, allspice and fir. Massive upon entry, the textured palate floods with flavors of blackberry compote, ristretto and hints of pomegranate, complicated by strings of brambly fruit. Ever evolving on both the nose and palate, the baking chocolate structure has integrated tannins that will soften in time.

Soft hints of toasted French oak dominate the hugely aromatic entry and provide ample support to the generous array of fruit that provide the start to this wine. An immense mid-palate explodes with a cacophony of dense dark chocolate and ripe bing cherries. The oak found on the entry lingers and frames an almost endless finish replete with a full complement of flavors and ripe tannins.
