Disciples Red Wine 2022
The Wine
Zinfandel forms the backbone of the 2022 Disciples Red Wine, drawn from three distinctive vineyards that each bring a different expression of the variety. At nearly 2,700 feet in elevation, the dry-farmed Blue Ridge Vineyard is one of Napa County’s highest vineyard sites, producing a component marked by bright acidity, high-toned blue fruit, and structure. The mountain fruit of Blue Ridge is complemented by the denser Zinfandel of Windy Flats, a rocky, exposed hillside overlooking Wooden Valley where cooling morning fog gives way to warm afternoons. Old-vine Zinfandel from Shyvers Vineyard, tucked among some of St. Helena’s most historic vineyards, completes the Zinfandel story and connects the 2022 to the old-vine roots on which Disciples was founded.
Petite Sirah from the steep, high-elevation Rancho Coda Vineyard in the Russian River Valley brings depth and density, while Syrah from D’Ambrosio Vineyard rounds out the blend with another layer of savory character.
Blend Composition: 51% Zinfandel | 32% Petite Sirah | 17% Syrah
Production: 1,038 Cases
Aging: Approximately 10 months in French oak | 65% new
Tasting Notes
The 2022 Disciples wastes little time introducing itself, filling the glass with an intoxicating perfume of fresh strawberry and purple fruits layered with cinnamon, white pepper, black tea, and forest floor. Bright and savory upon entry, crushed ripe strawberry and dark purple fruits mingle with tilled earth, black tea, and a persistent mineral thread. Energetic and precise yet wonderfully seductive in texture, the wine coats the palate as lively acidity and finely grained tannins provide freshness and structure. Full and enveloping without becoming heavy, the wine builds through the palate before slowly fading into an exceptionally long, savory finish.
